Sheet metal fabrication in Langley: buyer checklist before you request a quote

A strong RFQ does not need to be perfect, but it should make the commercial and manufacturing constraints visible. The shop needs to understand what the part is, what it is made from, how many are needed, what is critical, and what can be adjusted for manufacturability.

For replacement parts, photos and sample dimensions can help. For production parts, DXF, STEP, and PDF drawings are usually stronger because they reduce interpretation risk.

• Part geometry is shown by DXF, STEP, PDF, sketch, or photos with marked dimensions.
• Material, thickness, finish, and quantity are named or open for review.
• Bend, hole, weld, hardware, and packaging requirements are visible.
• Delivery target and any inspection documentation needs are stated early.

Ask whether the work will be reviewed as a complete fabrication path or only as a single operation. If the part needs laser cutting, forming, welding, finishing, and assembly, coordination between those steps matters more than the lowest single cut price.

Also ask how exceptions are handled. Material substitutions, tight bends, unknown tolerances, finish-sensitive faces, and missing flat patterns should be surfaced before production rather than discovered late.
